BFI FLARE 2020 - Lone Wolf + The Passing
LONE WOLF – January Jones’ comedic yet poignant drama Lone Wolf is a brilliantly produced short that echoes its progressive sentiments via a wonderful balance of tone.
A delightful and engaging narrative that follows a generic convention of a coming-of-age story, yet subverts both tone and genre in a weird albeit compelling and contextually appropriate manner. More is undoubtedly less here, and Jones's uses every second to magnify depth and layers between the characters and their social fabrics with consequence.
It is well shot from cinematographer Emma Paine and well-acted with a strong central performance from Charlotte Cook, who shows excellent range and conviction as outcast teen Sam.
THE PASSING – Writer-director Nichola Wong's The Passing is a dark but profound short that has an effectively brutal and depressing subject matter but wraps it into a melancholy and tragic tale of acceptance.
The non-cyclical narrative is an effective structure to implement layers of emotion via tragedy and heartache. Themes that hit deep with profound effect in subtle yet stoic moments of silence.
Wonderfully and brilliantly produced by Natalie Radmall-Quirke as Yasmine, who evokes a tremendous emotional weight throughout.
