Graham Hughes' Death of a Vlogger is a multi-faceted account of the viral calamity surrounding the internet age, wrapped around an intriguing and engaging level of horror convention.

The thematic weight incorporated by Hughes is undeniably surprising, compelling and profound. From what starts out as a simplistic webcam-orientated horror soon delves deeper, going beyond the surface level approach it wants the viewer to believe. Expanding any further within this review would ruin not only the surprise but also the sheer genius of what Hughes and co. have achieved.

At any point, if the viewer thinks they know what direction this feature is heading in, they are undoubtedly incorrect. It is this effective narrative mood swing that freshens and revitalises not only the expectation but the enjoyment level for the viewer. The viewer will attempt to unravel the twists and turns involved. One moment, Hughes has the audience corned in a haunted house motif and the next becomes a bold statement on mental health in the digital age.

Stating that the spectacular moments within the film revolve around surprises does not take away from Hughes’ creativity, nor does it undermine  his genius. The surprise develops from the way in which Hughes reinvents the wheel multiple times in the short space of ninety-minutes. All the while, the film still maintains its effective prowess.

The low-level aesthetic is fitting and never cheapens the experience. Even when perhaps this cheapness is identifiable, Hughes has a wonderfully creative and ingenious way of incorporating such elements into the context of the feature. Death of a Vlogger is a masterclass of a small production. Compelling, resourceful and wildly entertaining. Hughes cements himself as one to watch with a keen eye.
