The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 71 (The Thing 2011)

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show we are continuing our Shapeshifters and Body Snatchers series by talking about the 2011 prequel/stealth remake of John Carpenter's The Thing. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about whether this movie needed to exist in the first place, how it fits in the lore of its predecessor and whether it succeeds in enriching it in any way. We also spend a few minutes talking about the controversial choice to replace the iconic practical special effects with CGI, opine over the film's need to stage a Hollywood ending and that the cast in its own right was too big for its own good. We also wonder who Lars is.
