The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 46: Speed Racer

The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show, we are getting closer to The Source in our Circling The Matrix marathon as we train our sights on The Wachowskis' follow-up to The Matrix trilogy, their 2008 adaptation of Speed Racer. Over the course of our typically long and sprawling discussion (which may or may not have become heated at a few places), we talk about the legacy of this movie, wonder if it is actually suitable for children or if it is an infantile movie for a specific sub-strata of adults, gush over its unique aesthetics and ponder some fundamental questions relating to the place of The Wachowskis in the pantheon of filmmakers who push the boundaries of the filmmaking craft and whether the world is not yet ready to understand their importance.
