The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 32: A Good Year
The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.
In this episode of the show we are discussing Ridley Scott's A Good Year, arguably a standout feature in the illustrious catalogue of this iconic filmmaker... but not necessarily in the conventional way. Over the course of our conversation we argue profusely whether this film is successful in what it is attempting to do. In fact, we also try to figure out what it is that it's attempting to do in the first place. We try to figure out if Ridley Scott's kinetic style lends itself to the type of storytelling this movie called for, marvel over the film's organic charm, its cultural self-awareness, and even attempt to identify who would be cast in the lead role if this movie was made today. And as usual, we are having quite a bit of fun as we are busy exchanging barbs and having a bit of a giggle at the expense of good old Sir Ridley himself.
