The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 29: The Frighteners
The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.
In this episode of the show we are discussing Peter Jackson's first official Hollywood movie, The Frighteners. Over the course of this long-winded and meandering conversation we touched on Jackson's roots in splatter horror, where his career went later and what we think he could do in the future. In addition, we identified and scrutinized the multitude of references found in The Frighteners, opined on the film's peculiar special effects, its jarring tonal inconsistencies, how it is much darker than the label 'horror comedy' could possibly indicate and much more.
