The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 25: Joy Ride and Unhinged
The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.
In this episode of the show we are tying our conversation, albeit loosely, to the previous episode about Duel and discussing two films arguably inspired by Steven Spielberg's breakout hit, Joy Ride and Unhinged. Over the course of our long-winded and multi-faceted conversation you will hear us talk about the dichotomy between what Joy Ride wants to be and what it actually is, the idea of Paul Walker as a leading man, generation of Hitchcockian suspense in the opening of Unhinged, Russell Crowe's imposing character, the social commentary embedded within the film and much more. This nearly five-hour behemoth episode surely led to some truly illuminating observations and striking - perhaps even outrageous - personal confessions!
