The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 17: The Fountain
The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.
In this episode of the show we discuss The Fountain, Darren Aronofsky's follow-up to his immensely successful breakthrough hit Requiem For a Dream, which for some reason (and we get into the possible reasons why) ended up swept under the rug of history. We dig into the film’s rich thematic headspace, appreciate its filmmaking craft, identify potential strands connecting the film to its creator and his larger body of work and even argue over whether it is a bona fide masterpiece or an over-confident ego trip.
