The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 125 (Westworld and Futureworld)
The Uncut Gems Podcast is a show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.
In this episode of the show, we are opening what we jokingly call Michael Cricht-June, a short series of episodes devoted to the work of Michael Crichton. Therefore, it only makes sense to start with his directorial feature debut Westworld, as well as the 1976 follow-up to this movie, Futureworld. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Westworld as a protoplast to Jurassic Park, you will hear us wonder if this is a disaster movie, a speculative fiction, a proto-slasher or a combination of all three, and also how its inventiveness filtered into the culture and inspired many other filmmakers. In addition, we also talk Futureworld and its doomed mission to follow up an instant classic, Peter Fonda's hair, Yul Brynner invading your dreams and much more!
