The Uncut Gems Podcast - Episode 05: Alien Nation and Bright

The Uncut Gems Podcast
The Uncut Gems Podcast

The Uncut Gems Podcast is a brand new show where a bunch of like-minded individuals gather around a virtual table to discuss films that for one reason or another have become forgotten. Tongues pressed firmly in cheek, the team don their film historian top hats and rant from sedentary positions to hopefully conclude whether the film in question deserves to be covered by sands of time or if it is a classic in dire need of attention.

In this episode of the show we are taking a look at the 1988 sci-fi buddy cop movie starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin, Alien Nation, and pitting it against a film that could be seen as its spiritual descendant, the David Ayer-directed Bright. We are trying our best to understand why one of these films feels organic, lived-in and fun, while the other comes across as offensive to the senses (you figure out which one is which) in a no-holds-barred discussion about filmmakers' responsibilities, recipes for culturally-impactful genre storytelling, setting expanded universes, narrative tactfulness and much more!

Tune in, follow, like and subscribe at your podcatcher of choice and be sure to follow the show on Twitter as well! You can also support the show on Ko-fi!
